Kardinals grab 4th: Wasilla out-skates Kenai at Menard

The Kenai Central hockey team finished fourth in the Curtis C. Menard II Memorial Hockey Tournament at the Menard Arena in Wasilla on Saturday.

The Kardinals lost to Wasilla 6-2 in the third-place game.

Kenai Central coach Pete Iverson said a poor second period cost the Kardinals in the game. The Kards took a 1-0 lead in the first period, but Wasilla came back to tie. Kenai jumped back on top with a goal, but Wasilla then scored the last two goals of the second period for a 3-2 lead.

The Warriors then added two goals in the second and another early in the third.

Iverson said the tournament was a positive experience.

"Playing strong teams is going to help us get better," Iverson said.

The coach said Steven Harding had a great tournament for Kenai.

"He didn't get on the ice a lot, but every time he got on the ice he skated his guts out," Iverson said. "Guys on our team were noticing that."

Iverson also said goalies Keegan Remsen and Kyle Dougherty played well.

"Both of them saw a lot more shots than they should have, but they kept a level head," Iverson said.

In the semifinals on Friday, the Kardinals lost 10-2 to North Pole. Vance Bridgman had a hat trick for the Patriots.

Kenai's two goals came in the third period. Avery Palchikoff scored on assists from Truckee LeMay and Tyler Cue, and Jake Cheek scored unassisted.
