Nonprofits to meet

The Nonprofit Organization executive director group will meet on the first Friday of the month beginning this week at noon at Charlottes in Kenai.

Fundraiser set

The Emily Jacobs Holiday Bazaar will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today at Central Peninsula Hospital in the Denali Room. The bazaar will feature home based businesses, i.e. Pampered Chef, Avon, Creative Memories, Usborne Books, Mary Kay Cosmetics, Lia Sophia and Wild Tree with a percentage of the proceeds going directly to help Marcia and Emily Jacobs with medical travel expenses. Bazaar, bake sale continues

The Nikiski Senior Citizens Center will have a fall bazaar and bake sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today. The bazaar will also have some home based businesses i.e. Pampered Chef, Avon with percentage of the proceeds going directly to support center activities. Space is available to rent. The cost for a table is $15 a day for $20 for both days. For more information, call 776-7654, Ext. 6.

Carnival today

The annual Mountain View Elementary School Carnival will be held today from 5 to 8 p.m. and is open to the public. All funds earned will go towards student field trips.

There will be lots of food, games & prizes. Tickets are .25 each and most games cost 2-4 tickets to play.

Childcare conference slated

The Kenai Peninsula Early Childhood Foundation will hold an early childhood conference "Inspiring Little Minds Want to Know" today and Saturday at Soldotna High School.

There will be presenters, exhibitors, special guests, prizes and workshops.

A certificate of attendance may be used for education and training hours.

Driving class takes off

AARP will hold a Driver Safety Class at Central Peninsula Hospital on Saturday in the Denali room on the lower level at Central Peninsula Hospital from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The class is open to the public.

Fried chicken dinner set to dish

The Sterling Senior Center will host a southern fried chicken dinner fundraiser from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday.

The menu will include fried chicken, potato salad, baked beans, rolls, beverage of coffee or tea and bread pudding for dessert.

The cost is $12.50 for adults and $6.25 for children 10 years old and under. Call 262-6808 to sign up so the center can plan.

Electronics recycling event plugs in

The annual central Kenai Peninsula electronics recycling event will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Kenai Peninsula Borough Landfill site at Mile 98.5 south of Soldotna. Materials accepted include computers and components, TV's, cameras, card machines, phones, small appliances, old tapes and disks.

Household fees are $15 per vehicle with up to three monitors. Businesses and non-profits will be charged 25 cents per pound. There is a charge for extra monitors and TVs.

Items not accepted are exit signs, smoke detectors and vacuums. To schedule an appointment or to volunteer, call Jan at 262-5098.

Seniors offer Sunday breakfast

The Sterling Center serves Sunday breakfast from 10:30 am to 1:30 p.m. Menu includes a combination of several breakfasts all cooked to order, or a prepared "to order." Suggested donations are $10 for adults and $7 for children.

Womens' group to meet

The Peninsula Take-A-Break group will hold its annual country fair and dinner at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Alaska Christian College, off East Poppy Lane on Royal Place. Setup and sale begins at 6 p.m.

Special feature includes a crafts sale, silent auction items and outcry auction.

Attendees may bring homemade craft items and goodies to sell.Money will be donated to Stonecroft Ministries. The guest speaker will be Barbara Reberg of Soldotna. Her topic will be "Growing Up Country." The cost of dinner is $12.

Swim team seeks members

Peninsula Piranhas Swim team will hold registration and try outs from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Kenai Central High School. The cost is $55 a month for four days a week or $40 a month for two days a week.

Also an annual fee of $63 for USA swimming registration and $25 for awards banquet will be due at registration. Practices will be held at KCHS Mondays through Thursdays from 3 to 4 p.m. for students in grades six through 12 grade students and from 4 to 5 p.m. for elementary students. School-aged children welcome, but if your child has not completed level four of swim lessons, they will need to try out. You must be able to swim one length of the pool to make it onto the team.

Health center plans 1-day closure

Kenai Public Health Center will be closed Wednesday in observance of Veteran's Day.

It will reopen Thursday at 8 a.m. Call 335-3400 for more questions.

Pool, Rec Center closures planned

The Nikiski pool and Nikiski Community Rec. Center will be closed Wednesday and Nov. 26 and 27.

Medicare on tap

A meeting to discuss the new changes in Part D Plans, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplementa (Medigap) and new to Medicare enrollees will be held at 1 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Kenai Senior Citizens Center. The meeting is open to the public.

Christmas, holiday bazaars slated

The following organizatrions are planning events:

* The Sterling Senior Center will hold a Christmas bazaar and bake sale Nov. 13 and 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tables are available for $25 each. The Elderberry Caf will be open for refreshments. For more information or to sign up for a table, call Glenda at 262-2943 or the center at 262-6808.

* The Lutheran Women's Missionary League and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans annual holiday bazaar will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 14 at Star of the North Lutheran Church, 216 N. Forest Drive in Kenai. Handmade crafts, candies, jams/jellies, baked goods and holiday decorations will be available. All proceeds support mission work and is open to the public.

Community invited to Kenai resilience potluck

Kenai Resilience will host a potluck Nov. 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Soldotna.

Anyone interested in issues related to community sustainability is invited to attend, and children are welcome. Attendees are asked to bring a potluck dish and their own reusable plate, cup, napkin and eating utensils.

After dinner, there will be facilitated discussion groups for the adults and special activities for children. For more information.

Lutefisk, lefse dinner set

Christ Lutheran Church in Soldotna will host its annual lutefisk, lefse dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 14 at the church at Mile 1/4 of the Kenai Spur Highway in Soldotna, by the Y. Donations will be accepted at the door. For more information, call 262-4757.

Smoke out planned

On Nov. 19 the Great American Smoke Out, the one day a year set aside by the American Cancer Society to encourage smokers to quit using tobacco for a day, will take place.

On Nov. 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Nov. 17 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Peninsula Smokefree Partnership's Teen Leadership group will be at the Central Peninsula Hospital distributing free Adopt-a-Smoker survival bags.

Included are Tobacco Quit Kits with incentives and quit helps, information on Alaska's Tobacco QuitLine and information on other prescription products.

If you know someone that you would like to support in their effort to quit using tobacco, stop by the hospital or by Bridges Community Resource Network office, next to the Acapulco Restaurant in Soldotna, or e-mail tcap@alaska.net to arrange drop off or pick up.

Nikiski pool activities announced

The Nikiski pool will hold the following events:

* Water aerobics are held from 7:45 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

* Semi-private swim classes will held Dec. 1-11. Sign-ups are ongoing.

Playgroup events set

The Soldotna Community Playground Committee are seeking donations for a silent auction as part of a fundraising event. The proceeds raised will go toward the building of the playground at Soldotna Creek Park.

The group also has available for purchase pickets that can be scribed with names and wooden salmon that can be decorated by families. These items will be placed as part of the playground. For more information, on either event call Cindy Hurst at 252-4470 or visit soldotnacommunityplayground.com

Veteran's picnic Saturday

The annual free veterans barbecue and picnic will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at the Kenai Armory. All veterans and their families may attend.

Games, money toss, cake walk, split the pot and door prizes are planned.
