Fire destroys Soldotna home

A late morning fire destroyed a Soldotna home Monday.

Firefighters rushed to Salamatoff Drive about 11:30 a.m. to find a home engulfed in flames, said assistant fire marshal Brad Nelson. Firefighters came with three tankers, an engine and a medic unit.

It took about an hour to douse the blaze. No one was injured, Nelson said.

Nelson said the fire appeared to have been caused when the owner, Robert Nelson, no relation to the fire marshal, was stoking the fireplace.

The owner immediately got himself and his wife out and called for help after finding smoke in the home's upper floor.

Damage was estimated at $150,000, and the home is a total loss.
