Mullen to discuss homesteaders

The Kenai Historical Society will meet at 1:15 p.m. Sunday downstairs at the United Methodist Church of the New Covenant.

The featured speaker will be Marge Mullen, an early homesteader. She will give a power point program featuring many old-timers. It is open to the public. For more information, e-mail George Ford at thegriz@acsalaska.net.

Historical society to meet

The Soldotna Historical Society board of directors will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Fine Thyme Cafe in River City Books in Soldotna. It is open to the public. For more information, call Barbara Jewell at 262-4157.

Gardeners to gather

Central Peninsula Garden Club will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Building on Kalifornsky Beach Road, near the Bridge Access Road intersection.

The topic will be "Apple Growing in Alaska" and will be presented by Dwight Bradley of Bradley Orchards in Chugiak. Bradley has been growing fruit in Chugiak for about 20 years. He is a former president and newsletter editor of the Alaska Pioneer Fruit Growers Association and came to Alaska from northern New England. The program includes the history of the apple, recommended varieties, rootstocks, grafting, orchard layout, pest and disease controls, pruning, taste-testing results, and lessons learned the hard way.

Dems to meet

Democrats from House District 33-34 will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Alaska Reel Cafe at the corner of Funny River Road and the Sterling Highway. Patti Higgins, Alaska State Democratic Party chair, and Deborah Williams, executive director, Alaska Democratic Party, will attend to give an update on what the party is doing and to take questions. Swim team seeks members

Peninsula Piranhas Swim team will hold registration and try outs from 4 to 5 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Kenai Central High School. The cost is $55 a month for four days a week or $40 a month for two days a week.

Also an annual fee of $63 for USA swimming registration and $25 for awards banquet will be due at registration. Practices will be held at KCHS Mondays through Thursdays from 3 to 4 p.m. for students in grades six through 12 grade students and from 4 to 5 p.m. for elementary students. School-aged children welcome, but if your child has not completed level four of swim lessons, they will need to try out. You must be able to swim one length of the pool to make it onto the team.
