Time to move on with Soldotna cemetery

Soldotna Mayor Peter Micciche struck the right attitude last week with his call to move forward on the West Redoubt site for the city's cemetery.

No more battling locations, no more failed attempts at finding a compromise location. Mayor Micciche himself admitted as much.

After an advisory vote last year, countless meetings and studies, Soldotna residents just kept coming back, finally electing a block of city council candidates united under that single issue -- pushing forward on the West Redoubt site.

How many times can voters be denied?

While the site itself may be non-negotiable, that doesn't mean there is no room for accommodation in other areas. Serious consideration must now be given to those amenities that can mitigate any actual impacts on West Redoubt neighbors. That includes limiting access to the site, establishing buffer zones and considering a fence to surround the cemetery.

Mayor Micciche is urging his neighbors to move forward.

We would, too.
