Sherman Dale Green

Longtime Nikiski resident Sherman Dale Green died Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, with his family by his side at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna. He was 56.

Memorial services were held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 28, at the Eagle Aerie No. 3525 in Kenai. The VFW Post NO. 10046 and the American Legion Post NO. 20 performed military honors.

Mr. Green was born Oct. 30, 1952, to Sherman and Helen (Knight) Green in Columbia, Miss. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1971 and was honorably discharged two years later. Mr. Green moved to Nikiski in February 1976 and had also lived in Eagle River. He worked construction, working for Jackson's Construction. He loved darts, pool, fishing, grandkids, woodworking, collecting old model cars and coins.

"Sherman was a loving husband, father, grandpa and friend. He enjoyed telling jokes and teasing everyone. He played darts for over 25 years and was awarded third place in the American Dart Organization competition," his family said. "Sherman played high school football with the Columbia Wildcats in Mississippi and played with NFL star Walter Payton and their team never lost a game. He loved to be surrounded by all the family, always putting together potlucks. He will be missed by all. We love you Dad."

Mr. Green is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lila Green of Nikiski; daughters, Contessa Newstead and Teresa Kovelda, both of Nikiski, and Helen Rogers of Wasilla; sons-in-law, Christ Newstead and David Kovelda, both of Nikiski; grandkids, Mackenzie Kovelda of Soldotna, Kelsie, Corey and Kayla Green and Zane Kovelda, Rory Hoeldt and David, Zebediah and Zoe Kovelda, all of Nikiski, and Miranda Rogers and Mary Rogers, both of Wasilla.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
