Wind knocks out power in N. Kenai
Numerous power outages struck Homer Electric Association customers throughout the day Thursday, particularly in North Kenai and Nikiski.
Outages started being reported at 7:30 a.m., according to HEA spokesman Joe Gallagher.
About 190 homes in the Holt-Lamplight Road area were without power when a tree came down on a power line at 7:56 a.m. HEA repair crews had power restored by 10:38 a.m.
Sustained winds reported at the Kenai Municipal Airport remained steady at about 40 miles per hour throughout the day, according to the airport tower.
Another outage occurred at 1:06 p.m. near the intersection of Halibouty Road and the Kenai Spur Highway when trees brought down power lines in that area. Gallagher said 120 HEA members were affected. Power was restored at 4:30 p.m.
A third outage occurred at 4 p.m. knocking out power to 513 homes in the Miller Loop area of North Kenai. Responding crews had power restored by about 5 p.m.
Gallagher said people should be reminded to stay away from any downed power lines they see, and to report the downed line to HEA. Power lines, even when on the ground, should be considered energized, he said. Going near the line or coming into contact with it can cause serious injury or death.
