What's Happening

Halloween/ fall activities slated

The following Halloween/fall events are planned:

* There will be a Halloween Party for children at the Kenai Eagles Aerie No. 3525 on Saturday from noon until 3 p.m. There will be games, prizes and snacks. Call 283-4938 after 4 p.m. daily for more information.

* Grace Lutheran Church and School school will host an "Oktober Fest" on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. Activities include carnival games, a costume parade, a soup and dessert cook-off, a brats and root beer garden, drawings and much more. Each family is asked to donate bags of wrapped candy for prizes. Volunteers are needed to help run games. For more information or to enroll, call Joanne Love at 283-9551.

* the Kenai Elks Lodge at 205 Barnacle Way will hold it's fifth annual Spooktacular from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday. The carnival is open to the public and it is free. There will be carnival games, prizes, candy, haunted house, kid friendly buffet and refreshments.

There will be a costume contest for four age groups. The costume contest starts at 4:15 p.m. Trophies will be given to the top places and prizes for those who place. For more information, call Sabrina McGraw or Wendy Sandifer at the Lodge 283-7776 after 4 p.m.

* Soldotna Church of God will host a "TRUTH TIME MACHINE" from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the church at 105 W. Redoubt Ave., on the corner of Binkley and Redoubt Ave. Candy for the kids and snacks for the grown ups and activities are planned. For more information, call 262-4729.

* The Boys and Girls Club in Kenai is planning a Trunk or treat from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The top prize for the best decorated trunk is a flight seeing trip for five. Call Kim at 283-2682 for more information.

* Halloween Trunk or Treat and Firewise bonfire on North Cohoe at the gravel pit/slash site from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Call Jaci at 260-6333 for more information.

* Triumvirate Theatre and Nikiski Drama, Debate and Forensics will hold its annual Halloween haunted house from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Peninsula Center Mall in Soldotna. The cost is $3 per person.

* North Peninsula Recreation is hosting annual Strut Your Mutt Howl'oween Dog Costume Contest. The contest will take place Friday 6:30 p.m. at the Nikiski Community Recreation Center. There will be multiple prize categories, a doggie treat walk and refreshments offered. Dogs must be people and dog friendly and on a leash at all times. For more information call, 776-8800.

* Kenai Christian Church at 104 McKinley Street will have free hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, coffee, candy, goodies, live music and puppets from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Call 953-0102 for more information.

* Community wide Harvest Carnival will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. The carnival is for youth up to fifth grade with games, cake walk, jumping castle, and more. Carnival is sponsored by Engage Youth Movement and will be held at 209 Princess St. in Kenai across from Challenger Center of Alaska. Call 283-7752 for more information.

* The Kenai Peninsula Youth Foundation will host a Halloween carnival for youth ages 12 years old and under from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Soldotna Sports Center. Prizes, treats, games and skating with the Kenai Peninsula Brown Bears.

The team will also be available for photos and to sigh autographs.

* Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center will host Giant Pumpkin Carving and Trick or Treat from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, today and Friday and 10:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Kenai Sculptor Joy Falls will be carving a 319 pound pumpkin at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center today and Friday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The pumpkin will be on display Saturday from 10:45 a.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday, The Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center will have a limited number of smaller pumpkins to give away on a first come, first serve basis on Saturday. Best Bets

* The Kenai Peninsula Orchestra in conjunction with Homer Youth String Orchestra Club and the Central Peninsula Community Orchestra presents Haunting Melodies, family fall concerts Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Homer Mariner Theatre and Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Renee C. Henderson Auditorium at Kenai Central High School. Wear your costumes and trick or treat afterwards. Tickets are available at Etude Music Studio, Homer Bookstore, Charlottes Restaurant in Kenai and River City Books in Soldotna.

Events and Exhibits

* The Gary L. Freeburg Gallery at Kenai Peninsula College is showing the works of Kenai Peninsula resident, the late William Allen. On display will be paintings and drawings of the long time Alaska homesteader. He arrived on the peninsula in 1956 and studied art at the University of Washington for five years.

* The Kasilof Historical Society's cabin museum is open from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays or by appointment. It has historical displays, and area artists and crafters are invited to display their work on weekends. The cabin is at Mile 1.5 of Kalifornsky Beach Road. For more information, call 262-5125.

* The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Visitors Center on Ski Hill Road outside Soldotna has films on wildlife, the refuge and the history of the area daily at noon, 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m. For more information and complete pr ogram listings, call 262-7021.

Entertainment

* AmVets Post No. 4 in the Red Diamond Center holds blind draw darts at 7 p.m. Wednesdays; Texas Hold 'Em at 7 p.m. Fridays and 4 p.m. Sundays; and open house and dinner at 6 p.m. and karaoke with Mary and Jack at 8 p.m. Saturdays.

* BJ's in Soldotna will host a Halloween party at 9:30 p.m. Saturday; and Alaska's Hobo Jim at 8:30 p.m. Nov. 7.

* The Funky Monkey in the C Plaza in Kenai, in conjunction with Mike Morgan, will host Wednesday nights Acoustic Song Circle and Jam Session from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

* Rainbow Bar in Kenai has free Texas Hold 'Em at 7 p.m. Monday and Wednesday; live music with Acoustic Rhythm Machine from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. and pool leagues Tuesday; and live music with the Maybrey Brothers Thursday through Saturday.

* The Duck Inn on Kalifornsky Beach Road has karaoke at 9 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays.

* The Riverside House in Soldotna hosts the After 10 party Fridays and Saturdays with Rock Star DJ Service. Dancing until 5 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

* The 406 in Kenai has karaoke with Steve and Debbie at 9 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

* Mykel's in Soldotna has music by Dave Unruh and Bob Ramponi from 6:30 to 9:30 Friday and Saturday.

* The Vagabond Inn on Kalifornsky Beach Road will host Mark LeBrell and Ron Miller at 9 p.m. Saturday.

* Veronica's in Old Towne Kenai, will host open mic from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday; and Sue Biggs and Jack Will at 6:30 Saturday. There will be a costume contest.

Upcoming events

* The Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center, 11471 Kenai Spur Hwy., will host Scott Cossu and special guest in concert at 3 p.m. Nov. 1. Windham Hill Recording artist Scott Cossu will return to the center with a special guest, for a contemporary jazz concert. Tickets are $10 general admission and $8 students and seniors. Doors open at 2 p.m. for a 3 p.m. concert.

* The Triumvirate Theatre in the Peninsula Center Mall will present "Shop 'til you Drop... DEAD!" a murder mystery written by Craig Sodaro and directed by Angie Nelson. The play will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 6, 7, 13 and 14. Admission price is $10 per person.

* World Music for the Kenai will host "CROOKED STILL" from Boston for a weekday concert Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Peninsula Grace Auditorium at 44175 Kalifornsky Beach Road.
