Learning more

Get past that first day in good shape and eager for more? The following tips will help to refine and advance technique.

  • There are many good articles and pictures available on the Web. One informative site is http://www.xcskiworld.com/technique/index.html.

  • Attend a high school race and watch some of the skiers there. The first classical race will be Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. at Tsalteshi Trails behind Skyview High School, snow permitting. The first skate race will be Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. at Tsalteshi. These races often draw those with a knowledge of skiing, so don't be afraid to ask questions.

  • Take a lesson or ski with a group. The city of Kenai Parks and Recreation Department often offers lessons for beginners. For medium or advanced skiers, the Tsalteshi Trails Association has the Tsalty Dogs ski group. For information about the group, call Penny McClain at 262-6257.

n Look at a book or view a video about cross-country skiing. Even some old Olympic footage is invaluable because it shows people with nearly flawless technique.
