Voters have spoken

Good for us! The Kenai Peninsula voters strongly changed the direction of the borough Oct. 7.

The Alliance for Concerned Taxpayers has been pointing out to voters for years the wrong-headedness of the mayor and his administration's efforts to thwart the votes of the people and the efforts of citizens to rein in taxing and spending by the borough.

Spending taxpayer money to overturn their votes for term limits, a 2-percent sales tax cap and a $1 million capital projects cap was wrong, and the voters have spoken.

I don't know how long it will take Mayor Carey to undo some of the damage done to us voters and property owners. Hopefully, he will reduce staff, particularly some of the newly hired very expensive department heads (who serve at his pleasure and must offer their resignations now) and encourage a more sensible property tax assessment policy.

Good for us!

THE REC GUIDE

WINTER ACTIVITIES

If you think the Kenai Peninsula is beautiful in the summer, you should see it when cloaked under a thick blanket of white with the aurora borealis rippling through the celestial canopy above.

BERRIES OF THE KENAI PENINSULA

Whether intentionally seeking berries for jellies and jams or just out for a casual hike, residents and visitors will find the 50-some varieties of wild berries in Alaska hard to resist.

COMMON SENSE SURVIVAL

There’s adventure and beauty in the wild country, but also an element of risk.
