  • The Gary L. Freeburg Gallery at Kenai Peninsula College in Soldotna has a display of paintings and mixed media work by Spelman Evans Downer on display through today. On Sunday an exhibition of photography by Hal Gage titled Ice will go on display until Nov. 11. Gage will give a slide lecture at 3 p.m. Sunday followed by an opening reception for the show.   • Frames and Things in the Blazy Mall Artist of the Month is watercolor marine artist Brenda Schwartz. It will host a showing of her original water colorings and giclees from 4 to 7 p.m. today.

  • The 26th annual Christmas Boutique sale of handmade gifts made by local crafters will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Kenai Senior Citizens Center.

  • The Kenai Peninsula College Showcase program presents The Spirit Between the Lines: Spiritual Forces in U.S. Latina Literature, a presentation and book singing by KPC professor Dr. Barbara Christian in celebration of the release of her book, Belief in Dialogue: U.S. Latina Writers Confront Their Religious Heritage, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the KPC commons.

  • The Kasilof Historical Society's cabin museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. every day and has a resident carver at work those days, as well as historical displays.   • The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Information Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The center is on Ski Hill Road near the intersection of the Sterling Highway and Funny River Road in Soldotna and has educational displays and occasional interpretive programs.     Upcoming events

  • The Kenai Performers will present a video of writer, horse shoer, musician, historian and artist Mark Stolenbergs one-man-show Brothers Journey at 1 p.m. Monday through Oct. 21 at the Old Town Playhouse in Kenai. Stolenberg will introduce the video that is a prequel to his musical Fathers and Sons. He also will be available to answer questions. The cost of admission is $2 per person. This program is offered for school classrooms, however some seats are available for the general public. Seating is limited. For more information or to reserve a seat, call 776-8308.

  • The Kenai Peninsula College Showcase will present The Spirit Between the Lines: Spiritual Forces in U.S. Latina Literature a presentation and book signing by KPC professor Dr. Barbara Christian at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the commons.

  • The Kenai Performers will present Mark Stolenberg's musical Fathers and Sons: Men, Mountains and Music at 7 p.m. Oct. 20 through 23 at the Old Town Playhouse in Kenai. There will be a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m. Oct. 22. The musical tells the story of five generations of men in the Sierra Nevada Mountains from the arrival of the first wagon train in 1852 to the present. The cost of admission is $12 for general admission or $10 for students and seniors, discount with membership card. Tickets are available at Charlotte's in Kenai, River City Books in Soldotna and at the playhouse. For more information, call 776-8308.

  • World Music for the Kenai, KDLL and the KPC Multicultural Center present a concert by 2005 Juno award winners the Wailin' Jennys at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at Peninsula Grace Church Auditorium, 44175 Kalifornsky Beach Road. The band is a trio of singer-songwriters from Canada who unite classic and contemporary folk, alternative pop music, Celtic and country influences in three-part harmonies.

    Tickets will be available only at the door on the day of show for $23 for general admission, $20 for seniors, students and KDLL members, $15 for teens accompanied by an adult and free for children under 12. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.

  • The Paul Taylor Dance Company will perform at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 21 and 22 in the Atwood Concert Hall at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts in Anchorage.
