HEA crews kept busy
Wind and rain over the weekend battered utilities, but the worst didn't come until Sunday afternoon.
Around 1 p.m., 1,300 homes lost power along the Kenai Spur Highway between Beaver Creek Loop and Irons Avenue.
According to Joe Gallagher, Homer Electric Association spokesperson, the outage was caused when an insulator on a power pole near Rick's Second Hand failed.
Crews brought power back to 250 homes by 2:30 p.m. and restored the rest of the effected area by 3:35 p.m.
Strong winds were responsible for several smaller outages over the weekend, including one in the Robinson Loop area, near Sterling.
The outage started at 4 a.m. Sunday morning when a tree fell into a power line near Swanson River Road.
HEA crews brought power back online to most of the area around 8 a.m. The remainder of the area had power restored around noon.
One of the outages over the weekend was not related to the weather. A vehicle ran into a power pole in the Lawton Drive area in Kenai at about 2 a.m. Saturday.
The accident damaged the pole and knocked out power to 43 residents in the neighborhood.
HEA crews responded to the accident and were able to repair the damage and restore power at 6 a.m.
On the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula, strong winds on Friday night knocked trees into the power line that serves Seldovia. HEA emergency generators were put online Friday evening in Seldovia to provide electricity to the area until Saturday evening, when crews were able to complete repairs.
