Districts elected incumbents, split on term limits

District 3 Assemblyman Gary Superman faced no opponent in Tuesday's election and won with 77 percent of the vote the rest were write-ins. Assembly term limits were turned down in Nikiski, his home precinct, and in Salamatof. Term limits found support in Tyonek and Kachemak Bay precincts. The districtwide tally was 399 for term limits, 428 opposed.

District 4 Assemblyman Pete Sprague defeated opponent Ed Oberts, 523 to 281. Term limits were defeated in Soldotna and Mackey Lake precincts, though they won in the Central Precinct. However, in the central, only six voters cast ballots in the Assembly seat 4 race, four going to Sprague. Most voters in Central voted in the District 7 assembly race. The District 4 tally was 584 for term limits, and 635 opposed. Without Central Precinct's count, however, the figures were 379 for, and 450 against.

District 7 Assemblyman Paul Fischer garnered more votes than his opponent, Bill Holts, winning 417 to 366. In the four precincts making up the district, the votes for and against assembly term limits were roughly split. Ninilchik, the home community of Prop 2 sponsor Ruby Denison, and the Central Precinct supported term limits, while the Kalifornsky Beach and Kasilof precincts (Fisher's) were opposed. The districtwide tally was 731 for term limits, 632 opposed.

In the only other assembly race, Bill Smith defeated Leonard Wells, 790-207, for the District 8 seat. In none of the three precincts involved were term limits defeated. The districtwide tally was 728 to 564.
