Best Bet

  • An Evening of Classics Concert will be performed at 7 p.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church in Soldotna. Admission is $10. The concert is a fund-raiser for the Kenai Peninsula Orchestra. Musicians involved are the Redoubt Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Tammy Vollom-Matturro, the Central Peninsula Youth and Community Orchestra directed by Mellisa Nill and soloists and ensembles including Bill Larned, guitar; Erin Southwick, flute; Siri Larson, soprano vocalist; Sue Biggs, violin; Natasha Vaissenberg, piano; Phillip Hart, piano; the Amanita Trio; and the Kalgin Island Quartet.     Events and Exhibits

  • The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge will host an open house to dedicate its new Environmental Education Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday with food, activities and prizes. It is open to the public and there is no charge.

  • Artist Tim Fowler has work on display at Already Read Books in Kenai.

  • The Gary L. Freeburg Gallery at Kenai Peninsula College in Soldotna has a display of paintings and mixed media work by Spelman Evans Downer on display through Oct. 13.

  • Frames and Things in the Blazy Mall in Soldotna has Katzenberger pottery and traditional handmade birch baskets by Regina McAbee through September.

  • Kaladi Brothers in Soldotna has a chess club that meets at 12:30 p.m. Saturdays.

  • The Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center at 11471 Kenai Spur Highway has natural history mounts, a historic area and Native Alaska artifacts on display. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. For more information, call 283-1991.

  • The Kasilof Historical Society's cabin museum is open from 1 to 4 p.m. every day and has a resident carver at work those days, as well as historical displays. Area artists and crafters are invited to display their work at the cabin on weekends. The cabin is at Mile .5 of Kalifornsky Beach Road. For more information, call 262-0822.

  • The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Information Center is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The center is on Ski Hill Road near the intersection of the Sterling Highway and Funny River Road in Soldotna and has educational displays and occasional interpretive programs.   • AmVets Post No. 4 in the Red Diamond Center on Kalifornsky Beach Road has karaoke at 8 p.m. Saturdays.

  • The Big T bar in the Tustumena Lodge has live music from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturdays.

  • Hooligan's in Soldotna has live music by Ten Cent Zen at 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday followed by a DJ.

  • The Maverick Saloon in Soldotna has karaoke at 9 p.m. Mondays.

  • Moosequitos in Sterling has live music by Tuff-e-Nuff at 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

  • Mykel's in Soldotna has live music by Dave Unruh from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

  • The Rainbow Bar in Kenai has live music by the Mabrey Brothers from 10:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

  • The Riverside House in Soldotna presents "After 10," a dance party, Friday and Saturday nights. A DJ plays favorite Top 40 dance music.

  • Veronica's Cafe in Old Town Kenai has an open mic night at 6:30 p.m. today, live music by the Bob Ramponi Jazz Trio at 6:30 p.m. Friday and acoustic guitar and vocals by Stefane Bouchard at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

  • VFW Post No. 10046 in Soldotna has karaoke at 9 p.m. Fridays and bluegrass jam sessions at 7 p.m. Wednesdays for members and guests.

  • The 26th annual Christmas Boutique sale of handmade gifts made by local crafters will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Kenai Senior Citizens Center.

  • World Music for the Kenai will host a concert by Wailin' Jennys at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Old Town Playhouse.

  • Nikiski artist Jim Evenson is exhibiting paintings and stone lithographs in a solo show at Alaska Pacific University through Friday.

  • The Anchorage Symphony will perform Beethoven's "Ninth Symphony, Ode to Joy" at 8 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday at the Atwood Concert Hall in the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are available at www.centertix.net, the CenterTix box office and by calling (907) 263-ARTS.

  • The Anchorage Museum of History and Art has work by Alaska weavers Teri Rofkar and Arlene Skinner on display through Oct. 30, "Cabinets of Curiosities from the Wood Turning Center" through Nov. 13, "Quonset: Metal Living for a Modern Age" through Dec. 24 and "Spot the Dog," the annual children's gallery exhibit, through May. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.

  • The Paul Taylor Dance Company will perform at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 21 and 22 in the Atwood Concert Hall at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts in Anchorage. Tickets are available at Centertix, the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts box office, and by calling 263-ARTS. Ticket prices range from $18 to $33.
