Strickland, O'Guinn win

The Kenai Peninsula Borough Cross Country Championships at Tsalteshi Trails were well worth the battle with the drizzle and the wind.

The peninsula's high school boys and girls ran with vigor for their sport. To some, the weather was just what they needed to pull off their best performance.

Austin Gillespie, of Seward, who placed third overall in the boys race with a time of 17 minutes, 33.7 seconds, enjoyed the conditions.

"Gorgeous evening," Gillespie said. "I was worried about the rain but it was perfect temperature. I am happy with my performance."

Gillespie was 11.8 seconds behind the second-place runner, Tux Seims, of Homer.

Seims ran 17:26.1, placing second behind Nikiski's Sebastian Strickland. Tux was a mere 4.2 seconds behind Strickland at the finish line.

"It's better than most of them," Strickland said of running at Tsalteshi. Tslteshi's two laps make it easier on the runners than some of the three-lap trails the runners have raced on, he said.

The girls race started out the championships just before 5:30 p.m. There were plenty of cheers from family and bystanders as the young ladies headed up their first incline. The line-up stayed pretty steady in the early going, with Ivy O'Guinn of Skyview moving to the lead.

O'Guinn finished in first place with a time of 19:37.9. O'Guinn, a senior, said she's planning to continue her running career, possibly at the University of Alaska Anchorage.

Just behind O'Guinn was Bree Mucha of Soldotna High, maintaining a steady pace leveling off just less than 30 seconds behind Ivy.

"I know I could have kept with her," said Mucha, who has been in the top ten of every race in this season, of competing with O'Guinn.

Soldotna's Melanie Smith came in with a time of 20:07.6 to place third.

Other runners were pleased with their performances, too. Kenai's Taylor Ostrander placed fourth in the girls race with a time of 20:30.5.

"I've worked hard and it's paying off," Ostrander said.

In the boys race, Samulli Harju of Skyview finished in fourth place clocking a time of 17:36.0.
