Burn suspension goes back in effect

Staff report

The Division of Forestry in Soldotna has suspended burning permits effective Monday, due to high wind conditions and the drought conditions that have existed most of this summer. There is a forecast of rain for the weekend, but until that time, burn permits may not be activated.

Cooking and warming fires have not been banned by the Division of Forestry, but individuals must recognize that the fire danger is very high and caution must be used if lighting any fire.

Never light a fire during windy conditions. Build campfires on dirt, sand or gravel, away from the peat areas that can burn deep into the ground.

All fires must be extinguished completely with water. Re-check the ashes before leaving to make sure they are cold.

Residents should look over their defensible space around structures to clear any accumulated flammable material that could ignite from blowing embers from an approaching wildfire.

Call your local fire department for any additional local fire restrictions.
