Cooper Landing youth earns Eagle Scout rank

Dustin Dreifuerst of Cooper Landing earned the rank of Eagle Scout May 10. He is the son of Richard and Mary Dreifuerst of Cooper Landing.

Dreifuerst's Eagle Scout project was to build six picnic tables for the Cooper Landing Community Park. He accomplished this with the help of Sterling Trooper 562 and leaders Eric Willets and Ryan Nelson. The community of Cooper Landing showed support throughout the project. Dreifuerst will receive his Eagle Scout award at Court of Honor at 6 p.m. Aug. 29 at the community park.

He will continue using his scouting skills in his new career with the U.S. Marine Corps.

Whitworth College honors area students

Sarah McAuliffe of Kenai has been named to Whitworth College's Laureate Society for the spring semester of 2002. She qualified for the society by maintaining a grade point average of at least 3.75.

Mark McGarry of Kasilof was awarded a $4,000 scholarship to Whitworth College. The scholarship is awarded to students who maintain a cumulative high school grade point average of at least 3.5, rank in the top 20 percent of their high school class or earn scores of at least 1,150 on the SAT or 25 on the ACT tests.

Kasilof student chosen to lead college peers

Benjamin McGarry of Kasilof will serve as a Residence Life apartment manager at George Fox University in Newberg, Ore., this year. House managers, apartment managers and resident assistants in residence halls supervise campus living areas under the direction of a resident director. The student staff members facilitate events, provide friendship, serve as liaisons between the university and students and encourage spiritual growth in students. Staff is selected based upon maturity, communication skills, leadership ability and academic stability.

As training, McGarry will join other house and apartment managers at a four-day camping trip on the McKenzie River in central Oregon.

McGarry is a senior at George Fox University and a 1999 graduate of Skyview High School.
