Child injured after dirt bike, RV collide
Traffic in both directions was shut down on the Sterling Highway for more than an hour on Sunday due to a head-on collision between an RV and a motorcycle.
At approximately 11:25 a.m., emergency responders were called to the scene of an injured 11-year-old boy, who was unsuccessful in an attempt to cross Mile 116 of the Sterling Highway, roughly two miles south of South Cohoe Loop, on a dirt bike.
The 11-year-old was throw from the motorcycle, coming to rest on the yellow line of the highway with two compound fractures of the legs. The boy was wearing a helmet and remained conscious after the collision, but the angulation of the breaks to his leg bones were deemed quite severe, and at 11:33 a.m. aid from a Lifeguard helicopter from Central Peninsula Hospital was requested by the on-scene medics.
Due to the location of the incident, emergency responders cleared a portion of the highway and used it for a landing zone for the helicopter.
At 12:02 p.m. the decision was made by emergency medical personnel to take the patient to Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage.
