Oilers coach Mike Coutts said he was worried about the Pilots turning a triple play, because if the ball had hit the rubber without hitting the dirt first, it would have been considered a fly-out. The umpire ruled the ball hit the dirt first, however.

"A lot of crazy things were happening out there, but what matters is that we got the win," said Coutts, who was nailed by a foul ball in the third base coach's box for the first time in his career.

The Oilers got the win, which put them at 10-9 in the Alaska Baseball League, by battling back from a 3-0 deficit on a day where the strong wind made a such a deficit daunting.

Oilers starter Ty Davis was his own worst enemy in giving up three runs in the third. Davis had two walks in the inning, including a walk of the inning's leadoff man, and also made an error and tossed in a wild pitch.

"After the third inning, I was pretty upset with myself," Davis said. "I just wanted to shut them down and give the team a chance to get back in the game."

Davis did just that, allowing just two more hits before he was relieved in the seventh inning by Chuck Rider. Rider earned the save with three innings of hitless relief.

"An important part of the game was Davis coming back with some 1-2-3 innings after he gave up those runs," Coutts said. "He lost his composure a bit, but he got it back and that gave us some momentum."

The Oilers inched their way back into the game due to the wildness of Maxwell and a couple of timely errors by the Pilots. During his 5 1-3 innings, Maxwell walked four, hit three batters and had a wild pitch, a balk and an error. He allowed seven runs — four of which were earned — on just three base hits.

The Oilers were ahead 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Maxwell was relieved with two runners on by Chris Jones.

Jones hit David Newby, loading the bases. Ryan Gipson then gave the Oilers a 7-3 cushion with a two-RBI double that he grounded down the left-field line.

"With the wind, we were just trying to keep the ball on the ground or to hit line drives," Gipson said. "It worked, except on those plays where we were thrown out at first from the outfield."

Tracy then continued his torrid hitting by knocking a check-swing triple down the line in right. The excuse-me swing gave the Oilers a 9-3 lead.

"Everything evens out in baseball," said Tracy, who was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. "If their outfield is at normal depth, that's probably only a single. Maybe that was things evening out for us having those two guys thrown out at first from the outfield."

The Oilers begin a four-game series against the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks tonight at 7 p.m. at Coral Seymour Memorial Park. The Panners are in first place in the ABL.

"Even though we got the sweep, I told the guys there's still a lot we can improve on," Coutts said. "We're still walking the leadoff guy and failing on sacrifice bunts.

"The Goldpanners are very sound fundamentally."
