La Leche group to meet

The La Leche League of Soldotna and Kenai will meet from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month at the Frontier Community Services Playroom in the Red Diamond Center on Kalifornsky Beach Road. The league is a breastfeeding resource group that offers free monthly meetings, mother-to-mother breastfeeding support, telephone assistance and a lending library. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers are invited to attend. Babies are welcome.

Pool closure announced

The Nikiski pool will be closed Friday and Saturday. It and will reopen at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Sterling Senior Center children's library opens

The Sterling Area Senior Center is operating a children's library at the center during the months of July and August.

Sterling Elementary, Elaine's Second Hand Shop and Triumvirate Books have loaned the center books for the library. The library will be open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m to 3 p.m. to preschool and elementary school children. Center members and Americorp members will serve as librarians. Preschool and elementary school children are invited to visit the library. All children visiting the library must be accompanied by an adult. The library will open Thursday.

AmVets plans open house

AmVets Post No. 4 will host an open house at 2 p.m. Saturday at its center at 35390 Kalifornsky Beach Road, Suite 30, in the Red Diamond Center. Raffles for bobcat work and a chain saw will be held. Tickets may be purchased until time for drawing. Also split the pot and door prizes are planned. A steak dinner will begin at 6 p.m. potluck side dishes are requested. Marathon gears up

Kenai River Marathon Committee is looking for volunteers to help with setting up water stations, tracking runners, trail preparation and safety.

The races will include a marathon, half marathon, relay marathon and walkers half marathon and is slated from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 27. For more information, call Dr. Pete Hansen or Kris Harris at 283-4611 week days from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Disc golf tourney slated

A disc golf tournament will be held Aug. 1 at the disc golf course behind Oilers Field in Kenai to raise funds for Camp Mend A Heart, a bereavement camp for youth, sponsored by Hospice of the Central Peninsula. Hospice is seeking community members to sponsor or co-sponser a hole, sponsor a team, be a team player or volunteer for tasks for the tournament.

The day camp is free to local children ages 6 to 12 years old and is set for Aug. 17, 18, 19. For more information regarding camp or the disc golf tournament, call 262-0453.
