Oilers post dramatic win over AIA

Staff report

Jared McGuire put the Peninsula Oilers ahead with a solo home run in the top of the fourth inning as the Oilers defeated the Athletes in Action-Alaska Fire 5-3 Thursday at Growden Park in Fairbanks.

The Oilers, now 6-4 in Alaska Baseball League play, will wrap up their series with the Fire with games today and Saturday. Both games start at 7 p.m.

The Oilers scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning when Nate Faulkner drew a bases-loaded walk.

The Fire answered with a two-run home run by Matt Maloney in the bottom of the second, but the Oilers tied the game in the third inning when Luke Salas reached on an error, stole second and scored on a single by Jake Kahaulelio.

Dave Pellegrine pitched five innings for the win, surrendering two runs on four hits, walking two and striking out one.

Matt Meyer relieved Pellegrine in the sixth, and after getting touched up for a pair of singles, got outs on a sacrifice and a strikeout before giving way to Brian Chambers, who notched a strikeout to end the inning.

Chambers went 2 1/3 innings, giving up a solo home run to Maloney and striking out four without issuing a walk.

The Oilers pushed a pair of insurance runs across the plate in the eighth inning as Faulkner scored from third on a wild pitch and Justin Scutchfield singled and scored on a base hit by David Newby.

Those runs would prove to be crucial as the Fire made things interesting for Oilers reliever Adam Reifer in the ninth inning. AIA put runners on base with an error and a single. With two outs, Luke MacLean singled to drive in one run, but the Oilers were able to cut down the tying run at the plate, ending the game.

Matt Inouye was 2-for-4 for the Oilers; Kahaulelio went 2-for-3 with a double; and McGuire was 2-for-5 with a double to go with his home run.
