Community comes together for 'Fun'

The Nikiski Family Fun in the Midnight Sun event has been in existence for well over 20 years. And each year it's truly amazing how much the community steps up to make this a successful celebration.

This event truly couldn't be as successful without all of the wonderful sponsors that stepped up to contribute. I would like to extend a thank-you to the following sponsors: Offshore Systems Kenai, XTO Energy, Tesoro, Era, Metal Magic, Harley Davidson, Marathon, Amerigas, Beemun's, Three Bears, Peninsula Accounting Services, Tyler Vending, Team Industrial Services, Dukowitz Machine, HEA, Arby's, Lighthouse Community Church, Alaska Waste, Sundog Seriographics, Weaver Brothers, Sharon Burdick, CH2MHill, AA Dans, Kachemak Electric, Big G Electric, Kenai Neon Sign Co., Dan's TV & Appliances, Peak Oilfield Services, Bishop Lake Studios, Salamatof Native Association, Mike Chenault, Tom Wagoner and L & J Enterprises.

The NPRSA recreation staff worked hard to make all the age-appropriate games fun and successful. Great job Tammy, Jackie, Krystal, Rachel, Savannah, Kinsey, Sari and Elliott. You guys are awesome. And thanks to Bobby and Chuck for the setup and take-down.

A special thank you to Chief James Baisden, Assistant Chief Trent Burnett, Bryan Crisp, Levi Doss and the rest of the crew at the Nikiski Fire Department. You guys are great, and it's a pleasure working with you.

I would be remiss if I didn't also mention my super volunteers Teri and Steve Carter for giving out free watermelon all day long.

Thank you all for contributing to such a great traditional community celebration.

THE REC GUIDE

WINTER ACTIVITIES

If you think the Kenai Peninsula is beautiful in the summer, you should see it when cloaked under a thick blanket of white with the aurora borealis rippling through the celestial canopy above.

BERRIES OF THE KENAI PENINSULA

Whether intentionally seeking berries for jellies and jams or just out for a casual hike, residents and visitors will find the 50-some varieties of wild berries in Alaska hard to resist.

COMMON SENSE SURVIVAL

There’s adventure and beauty in the wild country, but also an element of risk.
