Truck catches fire inside DOT building

A call from the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities' garage off the Sterling Highway, south of Soldotna, led to an inferno that required firefighters from two departments to work together for nearly an hour to get it out.

Central Emergency Services was first on the scene at roughly 4:30 p.m. Monday after getting a report that a vehicle in the DOT garage was fully engulfed and contained a large propane tank in the back. There also was said to be several smaller propane tanks nearby.

Minutes later additional support was requested from the Kenai Fire Department, which responded with another tanker truck. At 4:48 p.m. CES called in its Sterling units to assist with the fire.

The fire was declared under control at 5:17 p.m. Calls made to CES for additional information were not returned by the Clarion's press time.
