Oilers waste chances against Bucs

The Peninsula Oilers left 13 runners on base in falling to the Anchorage Bucs 5-3 at Mulcahy Stadium in Anchorage on Sunday night.

The Bucs moved to 3-1 in the Alaska Baseball League, while the Oilers fell to 2-2. All four of those games have been on the road. The Oilers take today off before returning to Coral Seymour Memorial Park for the league home opener at 7 p.m. on Tuesday against the Mat-Su Miners.

Walks and hit batters are often enough to doom any pitcher, but the Oilers let the Bucs get away with free passes on Sunday. The three Bucs pitchers combined to walk nine batters and hit two batters, yet only two walks scored.

The lack of clutch hitting proved costly as Oilers starter and loser Will Currier got his squad in a hole early. The Bucs struck twice in the first inning and Kenny Bartz tripled and scored on a fielder's choice by Paul Goldschmdidt. Goldschmidt then scored on a double by Eddie Tisdale.

In the third, Bryn Henderson led off with a double, then scored on a single by Jimmy Parque. Currier lasted just 2 2/3 innings.

The Oilers cut the gap to 3-1 in the top of the fourth when Anthony Aliotti led off with a single, then scored on a single by Jeremy Gould.

Peninsula gave the run right back in the bottom of the frame when Kenny Bartz scored on an error by second baseman Bryan Horst.

In the top of the fifth, the Oilers made it a 4-2 game when Tre Dennis walked and was forced in when Aliotti was hit by a pitch. The Oilers still had the bases loaded with one out, but were unable to score again.

In the sixth, the Oilers loaded the bases with no outs but did not score. A crucial play in the innings was Gould getting picked off third base.

The Oilers also loaded the bases in the eighth inning with one out, but again failed to score.
