Bulls hand Oilers first defeat

By CHARLES PULLIAM

Like Monday's game, the visiting Fubon Bulls from the National Taiwan College of Physical Education struck first by scoring two runs in the top of the second inning to kick off the final match between the Bulls and the Peninsula Oilers Tuesday night at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.

"We didn't pitch to well very early in the game," Oilers coach Mike Coutts said, "Its just the way it goes sometimes."

The Oilers were quick to answer in the second inning when catcher Justin Scutchfield hit a double along the left-field line. The hit brought Matt Inouye and David Newby home to tie the game at 2-2, but the game wouldn't have the same come-from-behind outcome as Monday's 4-3 victory did.

The Oilers dropped their second game against the Bulls 7-3 for their first loss of the season.

"Things just didn't go our way ... it's just baseball," said right-fielder Matt Inouye of the loss.

After the 2-2 tie, neither team would score through the third inning, though, as three quick outs were the results from both the Bulls and the Oilers.

In the bottom of the fourth inning the Oilers were able to get a run when Inouye smashed a double into the pocket deep in center field. The hit lead to his second score of the night for a 3-2 Oilers lead. Although, the Oilers wouldn't score again.

Inouye finished 2-for-4 with two runs to lead the Oilers.

The Oilers' slim lead didn't last as the Bulls ignited and got three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Chun-Yu Kuo, Chih-Yao Chan, and Yu-Chieh Tseng all scored for the Bulls.

"We were a bit flat, but that's still no excuse for us," coach Coutts said.

Three quick outs against the Oilers put them back on the field where Dave Pellgrine replaced Chuck Rider at pitcher to start the sixth inning.

"Chuck did good ... it's nice to see a local kid play well," coach Coutts said of Rider.

On the mound, Pellgrine got off to a shaky start, though, by walking two Bulls' players who would later score off a single to deep right field from shortstop Yu-Chieh Tseng that would push the Bulls to a commanding 7-3 lead.

"I wasn't very warm in that first inning I pitched," Pellgrine said referring to his slow start.

Pellgrine rebounded by striking out three of the next four batters to get the Oilers back to the plate. Pellgrine would strike out one more before Chase Christianson would come to the mound for the final inning.

"There was no real turning point in the game," Pellgrine said. "If you gave them (the Bulls) something to hit, they'd get it, and they (the Bulls) just made some great defensive plays."

The Bulls closed the game on a double play after Inouye got his second base hit. The single showed life in the Oilers, but it was too late and was snuffed out by the Bulls defensive play to end the game.

"They're are just a great team," Pellgrine said.
