Oilers edge visiting Taiwanese squad

The Peninsula Oilers overcame a slow start through the first few innings to beat the Fubon Bulls of Taiwan 4-3 Monday night at Coral Seymour Memorial Park in Kenai.

"It was almost like two different games," said Oilers head coach Mike Coutts.

The Bulls, who are on a 11-day trip playing against Alaska Baseball League teams, were the first to score when Chih-Yao Chan scored off a double by Yu-Hua Lu.

Oilers pitcher Jesse Jordan threw a strikeout and Luke Salas caught a deep ball in left field to close the inning for the Oilers, though.

In the fifth inning the Oilers' hole got deeper when short-stop Yu Chieh Tseng hit a triple that brought in Kuan-Yi Yang for 2-0 Bulls lead.

The hit convinced coach Mike Coutts to bring Jarrod Dumont to the mound for the Oilers.

"Dumont is tough, and he pitched well tonight," Coutts said.

A short hit gave the Oilers an out, but a single up the middle drove in another run for the Bulls.

Dumont followed with a strikeout and right fielder John McCarthy caught a fly ball for the final out.

The Oilers found themselves in a jam with only one out and the bases loaded following an error and a walk. They responded with a double play to end the Bulls' half of the fifth inning.

In the sixth inning, the Oilers recieved two quick base hits from Jared McGuire and Nick Kielbert, and a sacrifice fly sent McGuire home for the Oilers first run.

Nathan Faulkner followed David Newby's walk with a triple down the left-field line that sent Kielbert and Newby home to tie the game at 3-3 in bottom of the sixth inning.

"Faulkner's drive was probably the turning point," third baseman Jared McGuire said.

A high fly-ball off the bat of Jake Kahaulelio sent the game into the seventh inning, though, where the Bulls were unable to convert after getting a man on base.

The Oilers, however, took the lead when Luke Salas scored following a deep sacrifice fly, caught in foul territory, from catcher Matt Inouye. The run gave the Oilers their first lead at 4-3. It would mark the final run scored as well.

"Its always good to come from behind and win," McGuire said, "Our chemistry is good and we're continuing to get to know each other better and thats helping a lot."

"We were a lot more patient (in the sixth and seventh innings) at the plate and that really helped," coach Coutts added.

The win gave the Oilers a 4-0 start, with the next game against the Bulls tonight, scheduled to start at 7.

"Its great to start 4-0, we just need to keep it up and get better," McGuire said.
