Electrical failure shuts refinery process unit

Failure of electrical switch equipment caused Tesoro officials to shut down one of the Nikiski refinery's processing units last week, but no interruptions in product supply are anticipated.

"The refinery is running, we're still processing crude and we're making products," said Refinery Manager Steve Hansen on Friday.

Repairs to the electrical equipment are under way, and Hansen said the incident as well as the repairs have not resulted in any injuries to employees.

Although one person reported a fire at the refinery, Hansen said the person likely saw an exceptionally large flame coming off the refinery's safety release flare stack.

"We didn't have any fire or explosion," Hansen said.
