Area residents find creative ways around gas prices

Rather than drive to the grocery store, Jenni Nusbaum rolled up to the Three Bears Warehouse on her bicycle Sunday. Nussbaum, a Kenai resident, says her bike is just a $70 two-wheeler from Fred Meyer, but with gas costing in excess of $4 a gallon, it's become her primary mode of transportation.

Other Kenai Peninsula residents are making changes, too.

With diesel costing about fifty cents more than unleaded gasoline, some residents are looking to purchase smaller vehicles. Others have altered summer travel plans or decided to forego them altogether. And some residents are still saying that they're not going to drive anywhere unless it's absolutely necessary.

With no end in sight to the rising gas prices, the Peninsula Clarion decided to ask folks how the gas prices have affected their personal life.

This is what they had to say:

* "You have to go with the flow. It hasn't really hit me yet."

Richard Zifko, Soldotna

* "It's caused me grief. It will cause even more with fishing starting."

Bill Dillon, Nikiski

* "We're not apt to make trips that we don't have to.

We'll start using a smaller car. We thought about going to Anchorage today but decided against it."

Betty Bea, Kenai

* "I don't hardly go anywhere unless I have to."

Jim Wood, Sterling

* "Unless it is important, we don't drive because of the gas. We only got one person making a living. We have to watch every move we make."

Emiliana Bascara, Nikiski

* "We try to fit as many places in one trip out. I don't like it."

Amy Hogue, Soldotna

* "Instead of driving home to Washington we have to fly home. We have to sell all our stuff and fly instead of driving it home."

Loretta Politz, Kenai

"It sucks. My husband pays about $400 a month in gas. He drives a big vehicle. We talked about selling it. That's probably what's going to happen."
