Poet's Corner

A slow march

up the mountain side.

The forest has decided

it is warm enough.

The climate is changing.

Marching trees

suck in carbon dioxide.

Spruce seedlings leap past the hemlock

into treeless tundra,

where blueberries and crowberries grow.

Shoving their way

into the homes of grazing Dall sheep and whistling marmots.

The Kenai Mountains are changing.

A slow march

to terra firma.

The polar bears have decided

it is time to move to land,

away from the melting ice.

The climate is changing.

Marching polar bears

look back to see their home disappearing.

Polar bear cubs roll off the ice

onto solid ground,

where no seals dive.

Walking away

from their main food source.

The artic is changing.
