Chambers set schedules

* The Soldotna Chamber of Commerce luncheon will be held at noon Tuesday at Froso's Restaurant. For more information, call Michelle Glaves at 262-9814.

* The Kenai Chamber of Commerce will meet at noon Wednesday at the Kenai Merit Inn on Willow Street. The featured speaker will be Jim Duffield with the NANA Regional Corp. His topic will be the progress and development of the Red Dog Mine. For more information, call Tina Baldridge at 283-7989.

The chamber is seeking volunteers, vendors and parade float entries for its Fourth of July celebration. For more information, call Tina at 283-7989.

* The Nikiski Chamber of Commerce meets at noon today at Nikiski Recreation Center. The featured speaker will be Jack Carver with Alaska Waste. The May 15 speaker will be Steven Ramsey. His topic will be BP gas to liquids. For more information, call Scott Hamann at 776-7676.

Lopeman honored

Kathy Lopeman, an oncology nurse at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna, was awarded the Lane Adams Quality of Life Award. She was chosen for being a role model who provides compassionate cancer care daily that went beyond the call of duty.

Kenai resident Alyson Stogsdill nominated Lopeman for the award after the pair shared their cancer experiences. Stogsdill, who is going through chemotherapy for breast cancer, said she found solace in the warm-hearted support of Lopeman who had just gone through her mother's battle.

To establish an oncology support fund, Lopeman organized the first peninsula Way Out Women snowmachine fundraiser. She has raised more than $50,000 to support local residents. She also has been the three-time event chair for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life of the Kenai Peninsula and jumped eight times in the annual Polar Bear Jump in Seward benefiting the society.

Construction finance seminar planned

Wells Fargo will hold a free construction financing seminar at 6 p.m. today at the Kenai Wells Fargo store at 11216 Kenai Spur Highway.

Topics will include overview of finance process and time line from start to finish. A question and answer session will follow with Wells Fargo construction specialists. Guest speakers will include Duke McGee, an ICBO inspector; Rick Abbott, manager of Spenard Builders Supply; and appraiser John Cristiano.

Realtors begin hospice fundraiser

Kenai Peninsula Association of Realtors will continue its annual hospice fundraiser Friday at Residential Mortgage at 44296 Sterling Highway in Soldotna with a barbecue to sell raffle tickets for a greenhouse.

Free hot dogs will be available. Proceeds will benefit hospice.

The greenhouse was made by Jim Brenton of Builders Unlimited. The main event will be at the Birch Ridge Golf Course from noon to 6 p.m. May 16. For more information, call the association at 262-1851.

Business conference for veterans slated

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Associated General Contractors will sponsor a conference on opportunities for veteran and service disabled veteran owned companies. The conference will be held from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 16 at Anchorage Marriott Hotel.

The purpose of the conference is to strengthen partnerships with agencies and organizations engaged with veteran-owned small businesses. This is an opportunity to network with industry professionals and form collaborative alliances with key government representatives.

The conference registration covers a continental breakfast, buffet lunch, workshops on Small Business Administration loan programs and bonding, and admittance to the trade show.

Dan's TV offers new line

Dan's TV and Appliance in Kenai will carry the Electrolux line of premium kitchen appliances with a distinctive European look with a curved front design and signature blue LED displays.

RCAC elects executive committee

Prince William Sound Regional Citizens Advisory Council seated a new executive committee at its May board meeting in Valdez. Patience Andersen Faulkner, who represents Cordova District Fishermen United on the council board, was re-elected president.

Steve Lewis, who represents the city of Seldovia, will continue to serve as vice president, while John French will continue as treasurer and Marilynn Heddell as secretary. French represents the city of Seward, and Heddell represents the city of Whittier.

In addition to the four officers, the new executive committee includes three members at large: Blake Johnson, representing the Kenai Peninsula Borough; Dorothy M. Moore, representing the city of Valdez; and Walter Parker, representing the Oil Spill Region Environmental Coalition.

In addition, two new board members were seated. Iver Malutin will represent the Kodiak Village Mayors Association, and Donald Kompkoff will represent the community of Chenega Bay.

The Prince William Sound Regional Citizens Advisory Council is an independent nonprofit corporation whose mission is to promote environmentally safe operation of the Valdez Marine Terminal and the oil tankers that use it.

Market vendors sought

The Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center is gearing up for its annual Saturday Market. Vendors interested in selling Alaska crafts and Alaska grown fruits or vegetables may call Harold Piland at 283-1991. The market will run May 24 through Sept. 13.

Children's cooking workshops offered

Children ages 6 to 12 may attend pint-size workshop cooking classes at 10 a.m. Saturdays at Allen and Petersen Cooking and Appliance Center in Kenai. Admission is two cans of food or a $2 donation to the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank. A parent must remain during the 30-minute workshops. For more information, call 262-3111.
