Did you happen to see the huge flock of cranes flying overhead last week? As snow is welcomed when anticipating Christmastime, so the sight of migrating birds is warmly welcomed when anticipating Alaska's springtime.
Recently, neighbors have been delighted to observe a variety of fowl that are making brief stops in our area on their annual journey north. Willie Morris showed me photos that he took of a flock of white-fronted geese and a pair of Barrow's goldeneye that he spotted at Stariski Creek marsh last week. My son, Caleb, joined Willie and Marilyn Morris at the marsh one morning and said they saw Mallards, Northern Pintail, Mergansers and Teal. In the inlet in front of our house we are seeing Harlequin ducks, scoters, oldsquaws and loons. Using my "Guide to the Birds of Alaska" book, I'm pretty sure I spotted a pair of red-necked grebes, as well.
