Elderly, disabled to benefit from transportation grants
ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Communities and agencies across Alaska are getting grants of up to $59,700 to provide transportation for the elderly and disabled.
The state Department of Transportation and Public Facilities announced the grants Thursday. The agency gave out $368,000 in federal money and $238,000 from the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority.
The money is being distributed to 13 organizations around the state.
Recipients include Native groups, public transportation systems, charitable organizations and senior citizen centers.
The money will be used to buy equipment, accessible vehicles and transit services.
