Starting early is key in choosing formalwear
Shopping for formalwear can be a breeze. If you start early, and pinpoint the exact needs you have, it will make the experience easier, and, possibly, fun.
First of all, decide whether you want to rent or buy. Compare the pros and cons of both. Factor in the costs and the need for formalwear in your life. Are you often going to attend events that require formalwear? If so, what style should you invest in? Or, would it be more cost effective to rent formalwear as needed? These are factors you should consider.
Now, it is time to search for the store where you will be purchasing or renting the formalwear. Ask your friends and family for referrals. Do some research on your own and comparison shop. One of the most important things to remember is to ask yourself if you feel comfortable with the retailer. Are you happy with the customer service you are receiving? Are all of your questions being answered? How long has the retailer been in business? Does he or she have a variety of products from which to choose?
If you decide to buy or rent in a certain store, ask whether alteration services are available. Are alterations included in the original price or is it extra? Ask about all the specifics on payment options. Can you leave a deposit and make the final payment upon pick-up? Or, if you are interested in a lay-a-way plan, ask the retailer if this service is available.
Furthermore, inquire about the costs for accessories, like vests, cummerbunds, shoes, etc. Once you have narrowed down your choice for a retail shop, it will be important to determine the type of formalwear you are looking to buy or rent.
According to the International Formalwear Association (IFA), if the invitation says "white tie" or "full dress," then it is a very special occasion requiring traditional full dress. A white wing collar pique shirt, crisp white pique vest, white pique tie, classic black trousers with the formal satin stripe, and traditional black tailcoat just covering the vest paired with black patent shoes should fit the bill perfectly.
If the invitation says "black tie" or "black tie invited," you'll want to dress correctly in a smart, comfortable tuxedo, cut almost like your newest business suit, according to the IFA. The traditional black tux, worn with white shirt and vest (or cummerbund) in black or dark shades, and a black tie or tie matching the cummerbund, along with black patent shoes would be most appropriate.
Remember, a cummerbund always should be worn with the pleats facing upward. If you are unsure as to what attire would be most appropriate, describe the event to the retailer, and someone in the store should be able to advise you as to what styles would work best.
When it comes to choose wedding formalwear, the earlier you get started, the better the results. When a bride and groom makes the decision on the style of the formalwear, they must take into consideration the time and location of the wedding. This will dictate the formality of the attire. Also, the retailer will help you in determining this.
For the groom, it may be important to set himself apart from the groomsmen by wearing something a little different. Maybe it would mean a different color tux or a different shade vest or cummerbund. Additionally, a groom should choose a cut that looks best on him, and, again, the formalwear specialist should offer advice on this matter. It may be advantageous for customers to ask their retailer about a discount when everyone in the wedding party buys or rents from the same store.
As the big day inches closer, make time to go for a tux fitting. And double check that everyone in the wedding party has fulfilled their obligations in this way, as well. About two weeks before the wedding is a good time to go for a fitting because it will leave enough time for alterations, if necessary.
Five things you should know:
1. Start early. Give yourself plenty of time before the event to choose the formalwear, be fitted, and allow for alterations.
2. Find a reputable formalwear shop where you feel comfortable purchasing your attire.
3. Determine the right type of formalwear for the requirements of the event.
4. Choose formalwear that fits your body type. The professionals can help you in this regard.
5. Ask the retailer about a discount for wedding party tux rentals, if applicable.
