North Carolina's largest black church group tries to weather upheaval
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ‹ North Carolina's largest group of black churches is looking for answers as its top administrator remains on paid leave and related agencies lack needed funds.
Last October, Archie D. Logan was asked to step aside as executive secretary-treasurer of the General Baptist State Convention. A management team took over, working with auditors who are due to report shortly.
The 137-year-old group consists of 2,000 congregations with 600,000 members.
The Rev. Charles T. Bullock of Raleigh, convention president, said Logan isn't accused of wrongdoing, and remains on paid leave over a ''personnel issue.'' Logan told The News & Observer he has not resigned and referred other questions to his attorney.
Among agencies supported by the convention are Shaw University, the Lott Carey Baptist Foreign Mission Convention, an orphanage, housing developments and an aid program for survivors of Hurricane Floyd.
