Around the Peninsula


Gala event planned

"Wild Alaska: Bounty of the Sea," including artwork by 75 Alaska artists, will go on display at the Kenai Visitors and Cultural Center today.

There will be a gala celebration of the show from 5 to 9 p.m. today. Several of the artists will attend, and there will be food, door prizes and "Cohoritas" ‹ Alaska-style margaritas. The gala is free and open to the public.

Area scouts to gather

Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts from all over the peninsula will gather for the annual Scout-O-Rama and pinewood derby championships from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Peninsula Center Mall in Soldotna.

Troops and packs will host hands-on activities for the whole family to enjoy. In addition, the pinewood derby championships will be held. The public is encouraged to attend. For more information, call George Schaaf at 283-1699.

Book sale planned

The Soldotna Homeschool Support group will hold its fourth annual curriculum and book sale from 11 am. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church. The public is invited to sell used curriculum and educational supplies. For more information, call 262-6282.

Asthma care training offered

The Alaska Chapter of Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America will hold a class in asthma care training for children ages 7 to 12 and their parents. The two-day class will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Central Peninsula General Hospital in the Redoubt Room. Class size is limited to 10 families. Future classes may be added based on interest and attendance. For more information or to register, call 714-4437.

Nikiski senior service board to meet

The Nikiski Senior Service Board will meet at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the senior center. The public is invited to attend. For more information, call 776-7654.

Agrium schedules fire training in May

Agrium Kenai Nitrogen Operations will conduct "live fire" training during May for its employees. During the training, there occasionally may be smoke or open flames visible from the highway near the plant, located at Mile 21 of the Kenai Spur Highway.

Training is scheduled for 7:45 a.m. each Thursday in May and at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

KPC plans one-day shut down

Kenai Peninsula College will close at 9:30 a.m. May 7 for a faculty and staff end-of-the-year meeting. The college apologizes for any inconvenience that the closure might cause the public. For more information, call Suzie Kendrick at 262-0320.

Army band to perform

The U.S. Army Field Band will hold a free concert at 7:30 p.m. May 8 at the Renee C. Henderson Auditorium at Kenai Central High School. Free tickets can be obtained at the school.

Indoor garage sale fund-raiser slated

Kalifornsky Beach Elementary School's Reflections and artist-in-residence programs, as well as the school newspaper, The Caribou Gazette, will hold an indoor garage sale fund-raiser from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 15 in the gymnasium. Donations currently are being accepted and tables are available to rent for $10. Vendors are welcome. Outdoor education center closes

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge's Outdoor Education Center near the Swan Lake and Swanson River Canoe Trail Systems will be closed from June 10 to Aug. 25. The center will be used to house trail crews that will be upgrading trails in the area. For more information, call 262-7021.
