Band Aid II concert to benefit senior center: Kenai Peninsula College
After last year's successful Band Aid concert to benefit the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank, Phi Theta Kappa, the Art Students' League and the KPC Showcase will host Band Aid II on Saturday as a benefit for the Kenai Senior Center.
This year the event will kick-off at 4 p.m. in KRC's Ward building with a runway fashion show presented by Mountain Mamma Originals, owned by Susan Evans, local artist and clothing designer. In addition to providing the fashion show, Evans will provide custom-made hiker pants as one of the door prizes at the Band Aid II concert. The fashion show will feature original designs created from 100 percent organic, hemp fiber materials.
The Band Aid II concert will start at 6 p.m. The event is made possible by local musicians who donate their time and talents. This year featured artists include Katie Evans, Vickie Tinker, Chris Pepper, Brandon Pilatti, Dave Edwards-Smith Dan Pascucci, Sara Superman, Robb Justice, Dan Grant, Lee Johnson, John Landua, Dick Weaver, Mellissa Glaves, The Hats and Charmers Daughters.
"The object of Band Aid II is to come together to help raise money for the Kenai Senior Center whose mission is to help people age with dignity," said Diane Taylor, Phi Theta Kappa advisor and manager of the KRC Learning Center.
Sponsors are encouraging a donation of $10 at the door for the fashion show and the Band Aid II concert. There will be snacks provided by the KRC Student Union. The event is made possible in part by a generous grant from the Anna Fosset Goodrich Humanities Program of the Damon Memorial Fund.
Arts show to compliment Band Aid
According to KRC art professor Celia Anderson, this year's Art Extravaganza provides a great opportunity for the community to get a feel for the arts program at the college.
The event will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the commons area of the Brockel building?the opposite end of the building from the Band Aid II events.
Anderson will provide a lecture/slideshow presentation titled, "KPC Arts at a Glance," followed immediately with a reception for the closing of the annual KRC student art show.
There will also be an exhibition of the Senior Art Portrait Project that pairs KRC art students with resident seniors from the Kenai Senior Center. The students create original drawings of their senior "partner" for the exhibition. This is the third exhibition of the Senior Art Portrait Project that began as a component of KRC's service learning mission that takes students into the community as part of their course work.
The Extravaganza will close with a walking tour of the permanent art installations on campus where plaques that describe the pieces will be unveiled.
Photography exhibit slated
Kenai Peninsula College's art department invites the public to the spring 2008 photography students' year-end show. Students in digital color, intermediate and experimental photography classes have pushed the creative envelope this year creating artwork that not only expresses what they learned in class, but gives the viewer a slice of the artist's passion.
Special techniques used in the pieces exhibited range from, digital infra-red and solarization, Polaroid emulsion transfers, darkroom prints from digital negatives, black and white landscape, expressive color abstracts, portraits and color landscape.
The exhibit will open as a "First Thursday" event from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Artworks in Soldotna and will be displayed to the end of May.
