The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District will hold a Federal Programs Advisory Committee meeting from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Borough Building assembly chambers in Soldotna. It is open to the public.

Masonic Students of the Year announced

An awards ceremony to honor Kenai Peninsula Borough School District's Masonic Students of the Year will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Renee C. Henderson Auditorium at Kenai Central High School. A flag ceremony, guest speakers from local government and the school district are some of the planned activities. Also honored students will be introduced by a family or school staff member, who will explain the reason the student was chosen.

Students will receive an engraved name tag for a plaque at their school, a personal plaque, various literature on Americanism, an award certificate, $50 savings bond and a letter from the governor congratulating them.

Scholarships available

* The American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 20 in Kenai is accepting applications for one of four $500 scholarships for graduations seniors, including students in home-school programs and alternative schools. Applications are available at local high school counselors offices.

The deadline for completed applications is April 25. Applications may be dropped off at the Post 902 Cook St. in Kenai. For more information, call Sue at 283-4774.

* Girls State applications are available at area high schools for girls who will be seniors for the 2008-09 school year. Home-school and alternative school students also may apply for an opportunity to attend a week long class on government.

The deadline is May 15. Applications may be dropped off at the American Legion Post at 902 Cook St. in Kenai. For more information, call Sue at 283-4774.

Aurora Borealis Charter School

The following students are on the track team: Eighth-graders, Taylor Ostrander, Travis Semmens, Colton Anderson, Haley Coffman, Lizzie McDermid; and seventh-grader, Freya Chay.

Friday hot lunches are discontinued through the end of the year.

Dates to remember:

* Thursday „ the annual Business Day sponsored by Mr. Severson's fourth-graders will be held in the gym from 11:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. Food and games are planned.

* April 24 „ spring concert will be held at Soldotna High School Auditorium (not Kenai Central High School, as previously reported).

Connections Home School Program

The program is enrolling for the 2008-09 school year. To make an appointment, call 714-8880 for Soldotna and 714-8915 for Kenai.

The offices will be closed Friday.

Dibels and CBM testing for grades kindergarten through third will be held April 28 through May 9. Call the office to make an appointment.

The last Scholastic Book orders for the school year will be due May 15. Parents can order online or pay with the orders in the office. No reimbursements can be made on Scholastic book orders paid after April 30.

A reminder that reimbursements requests must be turned in to the adviser no later than April 30.

Cook Inlet Academy

The spring carnival will be held at 6 p.m. today. The proceeds will benefit the computer lab.

The Indonesia trip update and pictures are on the school's Web site.

The school is accepting applications and class scheduling for next year.

Track has begun. The team is seeking anyone with throwing experience to work with the team.

Kaleidoscope Charter School

Families who were offered enrollment in the school for next year are asked to call Linda at 283-0804 to accept or decline the position.

Registration for new students will be April 24 and 25.

There will be a school tour May 2.

There will be a new parent meeting May 5. It is mandatory for new parents to attend.

The PTA meets at 6 p.m. April 28.

The spring art and music show, showcasing first- through fifth-graders, will begin at 6:30 p.m. April 29 at Kenai Central High School. The music show will begin at 7 p.m. Students will be bused to KCHS for a rehearsal April 29.

There is a parent volunteer tea at 3:45 p.m. May 1 to thank parent volunteers.

Kenai Central High

The Masonic Student of the Year presentation will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the auditorium.

The school will be on an afternoon assembly schedule Wednesday for student body elections. The elections will be held in the auditorium.

Thursday is the March Student of the Month luncheon at 11:53 a.m. in the library. Guests need to check in at the office before proceeding to the library.

The spring choir concert is at 7 p.m. Thursday in the auditorium.

Thursday also is an eligibility check for spring activities. Parents are asked to check Edline.

The Caring for the Kenai contest will be Thursday. The competition will be in the little theatre.

The academic banquet is at 6 p.m. Monday in the cafeteria. For more information, call Mr. Fields at 283-7524.

Kenai Middle

The volunteer luncheon will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. There will be entertainment, door prizes and a lunch provided by the staff. Volunteers are asked to R.S.V.P. with Carole or Cindy at 283-4896.

Character Counts winners are Luke Short, Joe Bressler and Sage Klauder. They received a pizza.

Kenaitze Head Start

Students are learning about the color blue, ovals, the letters S, R and Z and the numbers nine and 10.

The theme is stewardship and the value is "Caring for the Earth."

Mountain View Elementary

The parent orientation will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today in the library. Parents of children entering kindergarten in the fall are invited to come and meet the kindergarten teachers and hear about a kindergarten day.

Lost and found is located by the front door. For small lost items, such as glasses and jewelry, inquire at the office.

Nikiski North Star

The fourth- and fifth-graders will perform "High School Musical" at 7 p.m. today at the Nikiski High School Auditorium. There is no fee.

Kindergarten round-up will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday in room 14. Students must be 5 years old by Sept. 1.

Immunization records and birth certificates are required. For more information, call 776-2600.

The science festival is from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday in the gym.

There will be a site council meeting at 3:45 p.m. Monday in the library. Artist in Schools, Colette Krogol, is working with students in grades pre-kindergarten through fourth-grade. Krogol hails from New York and is a dancer who specializes in music and motion. She will be with at the school until April 25.

Redoubt Elementary

Parents may provide input for class placement for next school year by completing the form available in the school office and on Edline by Monday. Mr. Pothast can answer questions regarding class placement.

A special buy-one, get-one free book fair will be held through Thursday. Students will be able to purchase books during their library class and lunch recess. The book fair will be open to families this evening from 6 to 7:30.

Turn Off Your TV Week and all electronic devices with a screen continues through Thursday. Students who participate at least one day will receive a prize. The class with the largest percentage of participation the week will win a prize.

New kindergartner visitation and a parent meeting will be held from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. Thursday. Current kindergartners will start school at 10:45 a.m.

The school's cashier, Debbie Hepner, won the Northwest Regional Heart of the Program Award, which is awarded for outstanding service to students in a position as cashier or kitchen assistant for school nutrition.

Fun Fest will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. April 27. Permission slips will be sent home prior to Fun Fest.

Volunteer Appreciation Week is April 27 through May 2.

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 5 through 9.

Students may reserve their 2007-08 school yearbook by bringing $15 to the school office. Checks should be made payable to the school. Yearbooks will arrive in May.

Big G Box Tops drawings will continue through the end of the school year. In addition, families are asked to collect box tops throughout the summer. The box tops program will continue in the fall.

Students in grades one through six who have been Students of Excellence will be honored with a special skating activity April 25. Kindergarten students will be honored with a special art activity. These students were not tardy, finished their work, had no office or bus incidences and tried their best. The spring musical featuring students in grades one, two and three will begin at 6 p.m. April 24 in the gym.

Sixth-graders will visit Soldotna Middle School on April 25 and representatives from Soldotna Middle will discuss programs and middle school activities with students on April 24.

PTA is sponsoring FunFest for students in grades one through six from 3:40 to 5:30 p.m. April 25. Students will select activities to attend by completing forms sent home with them. Forms must be on time so activities may be planned.

Soldotna High

Rotary Students of the Month are: Thomas Werth, Miranda Zufelt, Cerese McBee, Eric Johnson, Michaela Shirnberg, Kathryn Vengley, Cody Tate, Karen Duffy, Jordan Bower and Amanda Norris.

Scholarship opportunities still exist for seniors. Information is available in the counseling office.

Two SAT test dates remain „ May 3 and June 7.

One ACT test date remains „ June 14. Registration materials are available in the counseling office.

Soldotna Middle

District Middle School Forensics tourney results are: First place Extemporaneous Commentary, Jazmin Hetherton; second place Reader's Theater, Cole Aaronson and Derek Thomson; and second place Humorous Interpretation, Dillon Tondre.

The nominations for Masonic Student of the year were: Bree Mucha, Madeline Ransom, Evan Withrow, Lacey Moore, Megan Neill, Christianna Garcia, Katie Clonan, Melanie Smith, Savannah Smith, Holly Eyre and Hannah Cristiano.

The schools final concert will be held at 7 p.m. May 13 in the big gym.

Below are the dates and times that counselors, Mrs. Litzenberger and Mrs. Moock will visit the feeder elementary schools to visit with the sixth-graders and to hand out registration packets for next year's classes.

Ms. Church's world history classes will host their annual Egyptian fashion show April 24. Parents, classes and community members are invited to attend the 10:30 a.m. (fifth-period) show.

Sterling Elementary

The school will begin kindergarten registration Monday through April 25.

Kindergarten classroom visitation will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. April 24.

The final RIF book distribution day will be April 25. Every child in the school will go home with a new book.

School Art Night will be held at 6 p.m. April 24. The gym will be set up like an artist's gallery. Refreshments will be served.

The primary band concert will be held at 6:29 p.m. April 30.

Tustumena Elementary

The school's memory book committee has initiated a contest for the students to enter a drawing for the book cover. Entries are due by Thursday. The winning artist will receive a gift certificate for ice cream.

The public library portion of the school's library has scheduled its annual book fair fundraiser beginning Monday. Students will have the opportunity to visit the fair during their scheduled class periods. Parents willing to assist with the event may call Katja Wolfe at 262-7058.

Wings Christian Academy

Matthew Grant won the Cleanest Desk of the Week.

James Gray won the most interesting fact contest.

This week, the school has been having spirit week, in which the students dress to a different theme each day. Today is Dr. Seuss Day/Crazy Day; Wednesday will be Formal Day; Thursday will be Sport Day; and Friday will be Patriotic/School Spirit Day.

A reminder to parents and students, the annual dinner-auction will be held April 25 at the school.
