Obituary




 

Longtime Soldotna resident John L. Smallwood died Monday, March 17, 2008, at the Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage. He was 66.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, March 24, at Peninsula Memorial Chapel, 5839 Kenai Spur Highway in Kenai. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services. Father Andrew Sensenig, OMI, will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the VFW Post No. 10046 and the American Legion Post 20. Pallbearers will include, Matthew Yamaoka, Timothy Yamaoka, Curtis Sipes, Callen McKenzie, Steve Bernhardt and Arnie Sipes. Graveside services will immediately follow where John will be laid to rest next to his wife, Janice, at the Kenai City Cemetery.

Mr. Smallwood was born Aug. 12, 1941, to Rosco and Anne (Hamilton) Smallwood in Detroit, Mich. He worked as a truck driver for the Ford Motor Company in Detroit. Mr. Smallwood moved to Soldotna Nov. 18, 1982, where he has resided ever since.

"He loved spending time with his family and was an outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish," his family said.

Mr. Smallwood was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Smallwood.

He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Smallwood of Soldotna; son, Mark Smallwood of Soldotna; daughter, Carol Yamaoka and her husband, Wes, of Soldotna; grandsons, Matthew and Timothy Yamaoka of Soldotna; and granddaughter, Heather Smallwood of Soldotna.

Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel.
