Homer resident Robert E. Harford "Wasilla Gorilla" died Saturday, March 8, 2008, at South Peninsula Hospital in Homer with his family by his side. He was 70.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Hickerson Cemetery, with a celebration of life service at the Homer United Methodist Church in Homer. The American Legion Post 16 and The Anchor Point VFW performed full military honors. Pallbearers included, Wayne, Russell, Randy Harford, Sam McGee III, Daniel Stanish, and John Sheldon. Honorary pallbearers included, Robert Webb, Gene Wagy, Mel Bass and Jeremy Webb.

Mr. Harford was born June 25, 1937, to Russell and Irene Harford in Woonsocket, R.I. He enlisted with the United States Air Force in 1954 and was honorably discharged in 1974. He received good conduct medals and other awards from the U.S. Airforce, American Legion, VFW and Elks Lodge. He became a resident of Alaska in 1970 living in Anchorage, Wasilla and then Homer until his death. He worked for the U.S. Air Force, civil service, Elmendorf Air Force Base in 1986, the Anchorage Airport as a janitor and K&W Distributors. He enjoyed fishing, latch hook rugs and riding in the KX3 Auto tow truck race.

"Bob loved his children and grandchildren, but could not show it. He had a heart of gold. He was the center of our family and the toughest man I knew," his family said.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Sonny; and son-in-laws, Clayton Richardson and Kevin Sheldon.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, N. Gloria Harford; children, Cheryl Richardson, Wayne Harford and his wife, Ronna, Russell Harford, Cory Sheldon and Randy Harford and his wife, Nina; grandchildren, Mary, Joshua, Mariah, Angel, Justin, Gloriella, Atrayu, Isreal, Deovine, Billy Joe, Shauna, Crystal, Johnny, Rodney and Alexis; sister, Lorraine Landry; brother-in-law, Norman Arsenault; sister-in-law, Lil Harford; uncle, Ray Lussier; 21 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Arrangements were made by Homer Funeral Home.
