Easter events open to all

While there are several religious institutions devoting services and special functions to the Easter holiday, the Nikiski Senior Citizens Center will hold festivities for those not affiliated with a place of worship.

"Everyone is welcome to come to our event. We offer it to the community for those who don't attend services or who don't have a church they regularly attend," said director Leigh Sanger.

The senior center events are split into two functions, the first of which is Easter breakfast brunch, today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"We've typically got scrambled eggs, sausage, potatoes O'Brien and other items. This year we'll also be having a fruit bar," Sanger said.

The cost of the brunch is $8.50 for adults and $3 for children ages 5 and under.

Once everyone has filled up, they can burn some energy by participating in the senior center's second event: an Easter egg hunt, which will begin at 1:30 p.m.

"We just added the egg hunt a few years ago, but we usually have 50 to 70 kids that will attend," Sanger said.

There are more than enough hidden eggs for everyone, too, she added.

"We've made more than 300 eggs, and we split the kids into different age groups: 1- to 3-, 4- to 7- and 8- to 12-year-olds. It's really fun to watch them, especially the 1- to 3-year-olds. We hide their eggs in plain sight, but they're all over.

"And depending on the snow, we'll hide some in the woods for the older kids," she said.

Prizes will be awarded for all age groups, she added.
