In Case of Ashfall ...

The following are recommended actions during and after an ashfall, from the Alaska Volcano Observatory pamphlet "Ash Alert," available from the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, P.O. Box 5750, Fort Richardson, Alaska 99505-5750.

People care during an ashfall

  • Stay indoors, especially children, elderly and people with respiratory problems.
  • Minimize exertion.
  • Maintain normal routines for children as much as possible and do not try to get them from school before told to do so.
  • Use respirators if outdoors.
  • Use the telephone for emergencies only.
  • Keep pets inside as much as possible.
  • Get clean water to livestock as soon as possible;
  • If pets go out, brush or vacuum them before allowing them indoors again. Do not allow them to get wet, or attempt to wash them.

    After an ashfall

  • Limit outdoor activities of children and pets until ash dust is no longer evident.

    Home care during an ashfall

  • Close doors, windows and dampers.
  • Avoid burning woodstoves or fireplaces.
  • Eliminate draft sources.
  • Do not run exhaust fans or clothes dryers.
  • Listen to the radio.
  • Vacuum furniture and carpets and try not to wipe, as ash will scratch.
  • Brush, shake and presoak clothes then wash with plenty of detergent. Avoid liquid soap as it will gum up.
  • Cover and don't use computers, stereos or other sensitive equipment.

    Home care after an ashfall

  • Wear a respirator or breathing mask during ash cleanup.
  • Use goggles for eye protection, especially if wearing contact lenses.
  • Remove heavy accumulations of ash from roofs and rain gutters.
  • When sweeping, dampen with water or sprinkle with "Industrial Sweep" to avoid raising dust unnecessarily.
  • Dampen and mow lawns, then bag clippings to reduce dust.

    Automobile care during an ashfall

  • Do not drive unless absolutely necessary.
  • If you must drive, go slowly, keeping plenty of room between cars.
  • Use windshield washer every time you use your wipers.
  • Do not drive without an air filter.
  • Change your air filter as soon as you notice a loss of engine power.
  • If your car stalls, push it to the side of the road, then stay inside of it.

    Automobile care after an ashfall

  • Change oil and oil filters.
  • Change air filter.
  • Wash car thoroughly with water.
