The letters regarding atheists and Muslims, found respectively in the Jan. 29 and 30 editions, show a frightening lack of knowledge as regards to our own country and its founding principles.

Amendment I: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” These words are found in the Bill of Rights for our country. They are fundamental principles that the United States are built on.

Sadly, both of the previous writers do not acknowledge this. They instead trot out fear-mongering toward Muslims or a relic from the McCarthy era. Maybe they should instead look at what was originally on the dollar bill. “E Pluribus Unum”: Latin for “Out of Many, One.”
