Olstad, Minnick lead Iron Dog

Todd Minnick and Nick Olstad, both of Wasilla, were in first place in the 2009 Tesoro Iron Dog as of 9:45 p.m. on Monday night.

Minnick and Olstad were the first team into Kaltag and were taking their layover.

Riding in third were Dusty VanMeter of Kasilof and Marc McKenna of Anchorage. VanMeter is racing in the Iron Dog for the 13th time. He has won the race three times.

Scott Davis of Soldotna and Todd Palin of Wasilla were riding in fifth place. Davis is racing for the 25th time looking to add to his total of eight titles.

In 12th place were Chris Downs of Ninilchik and Ryan Swanson of Kenai. The pair is racing for the second time after finishing 16th last year as rookies.

In 21st place were Sam Renney of Sterling and John Miller II of Willow. Both are rookies.

In 29th place were Joee Redington of Seward and John Dart of Manley Hot Springs. Both are rookies.
