ANCHORAGE (AP) -- Here are some places to look when reserving public-use cabins in Alaska.

U.S. Forest Service cabins: Make reservations for more than 40 cabins up to 180 days in advance in the Chugach National Forest and Prince William Sound. Reservations can be made on the Internet with a credit card or by calling 1-877-444-6777.

Alaska State Park cabins: More than 40 cabins available statewide; many are handicap accessible. Check the Web for availability, then make reservations up to 180 days in advance by mail or in person at one of six state Department of Natural Resources offices statewide. Checks or credit cards are accepted. The Anchorage office, 550 W. Seventh Ave. Suite 1260, Anchorage, AK 99501, is open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Or call 269-8400. The office is closed Jan. 15.

National Park Service: Kenai Fjords National Park has three coastal cabins. Also, the ranger cabin at Exit Glacier is available for rent in the winter; call 1-907-224-3175. Unlike other cabins that are available six months in advance, the Park Service will take reservations for the three coastal cabins for any date between May 25 to Sept. 9 beginning Jan. 2. Reservations can be made through the Alaska Public Lands Information Center, 605 W. Fourth Ave. Suite 105, Anchorage 99501 or call 271-2737 for more information. In the heart of the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, there are also 10 public-use cabins. They are remote and require a charter flight in. They are also free on a first-come, first-serve basis. Contact park headquarters in Glennallen at 1-907-784-3295.

Other cabins: The Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge maintains seven rustic cabins accessible by floatplane or boat. Call 1-907-487-2600. The Bureau of Land Management has cabins in the White Mountains National Recreation Area near Fairbanks. Call 907-474-2250. The Eagle River Nature's Center in Chugach State Park maintains one cabin and two yurts and will allow reservations up to one year in advance. Check http://www.ernc.org and then call 694-2108.
