When Seat A incumbent Jim Stogsdill was asked to identify the biggest issue he sees facing the city, he pointed to annexation.

I have been a resident of Alaska for 23 years with the majority of that time here in Soldotna. I have been a nurse for over 30 years working at CPH for more than 10 in the OB department. I have been an active parent in the city and schools as a volunteer, coach, PTA president. In that time I have come to appreciate not only the great opportunities this state has to offer but also the great diversity of people that live here. I believe that people should be accepted for who they are and have the right to their own opinions. The City Councils' job is to listen to those opinions and make decisions based on the majority of the people that voted for them to serve.

In 1950 there were 21 people living in Soldotna. I was a four-year old, happy to have the woods as my playground. The young settlers who came to this lovely land of salmon-filled rivers and moose and berry-filled woods followed in the footsteps of the area's ancient people. As they began to build a community, no one foresaw the eventual need for a cemetery. Here we are, at this late date, with many of the early settlers buried in Kasilof, trying to settle on the best possible location for a town cemetery.

As the City of Soldotna election nears, I would like to reflect on our cities current state and our future. To those of us who grew up elsewhere and moved to Soldotna later, this community is a breath of fresh air. The people are warm and friendly, the schools and parks are outstanding. It is an overall upbeat and progressive community. Many times we need to take a step away to appreciate what we have. I will say, and have said too many people that Soldotna was the best thing that happened to my family and I. For that I hope to be able to return this to the city by public service.

I have considered the Kenai/Soldotna area home since I was 6 years old. As a State Trooper, I have the freedom to live anywhere in the State, but because of the quality of life offered, my wife and I chose to make our home in Soldotna and to raise our children here. In the last few years I have become increasingly interested in what is happening in the City and in the city government. I began to take an active interest and attended several city council meetings.

I was elected to a one year Soldotna City Council seat 15 years ago. It was my first political experience and while I moved on to the Borough Assembly and Borough Mayor, serving on the City Council was an enjoyable and positive experience and I look forward to serving on the City Council again.

I believe the present City Council, Mayor, administration and city employees serve the citizens of Soldotna well. During the past year we have hired a new City Manager, a new Finance Director and a new City Planner. All of these positions were filled with very highly qualified individuals who have made Soldotna a better place to live, work and recreate. The present City Council is a cohesive group of individuals who work hard for the citizens of Soldotna. We all try our best to formulate the right decisions for the public interest after reviewing the pertinent information and hearing public testimony on the issue at hand.
