Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby

Joseph Volk, of Reedsville, West Virginia took home a grand prize of $46,302 for his 345.4 lb entry in 2003's Homer Jackpot Halibut Derby. The Homer Chamber of Commerce hopes the jackpot for 2004's derby, which will start May 1 and runs until Labor Day, will be at least that large.

Daily tickets cost $10. The jackpot goes to the angler catching the biggest halibut. There also are prizes of $1,000, $750, $500, $250 and $125 for the five biggest fish caught each month, and a $5,000 released fish prize will be awarded to the fisherman randomly drawn who catches an 80 lb or larger halibut and throws it back.

Tagged halibut released in lower Cook Inlet bring big money, too. Many fish wear tags that are worth $500 to $1000 and 4 halibut carry tags worth $10,000 if they are caught on their specific month.

All ticket holders, whether they fish or not, are entered in the drawing for a $2,000 cash prize.
